Story

“Kobushi” is a French animated series that aired from September 30, 2012, to May 9, 2017, spanning 104 episodes. The series, produced by Zagtoon, Inspidea, and 2 Minutes, is set in a Japanese restaurant where, every night after closing, sushi, maki, and temaki come to life. These characters, known as the Kobushis, live in a village-like setting within the restaurant, using items like the sushi refrigerated display and decorative lanterns as their homes. The main characters include Ebi, Toro, Onigiri, Tamago, and Hokkigai, who are trained by Master Tako to be samurais with the mission of defending their village from Néko, a porcelain cat determined to eat them all.

Néko, the primary antagonist, is a porcelain cat believed to be a Japanese divinity. He is obsessed with eating the Kobushis and manipulates Ebi, a traitorous shrimp sushi, to capture them. Other significant characters include Toro, a proud red tuna sushi and the youngest of the group; Onigiri, a rice ball who prefers art over fighting; Tamago, a talented sushi disguised as a boy due to the prohibition of female samurais; Master Tako, a wise old octopus sushi and the group’s teacher; Hokkigai, a clumsy shellfish sushi; Oni-San, a shrimp ghost haunting Ebi; Shaké, a salmon sushi and Master Tako’s granddaughter; Ikura, a makizushi dreaming of becoming a samurai; Tekka, a smart tuna makizushi; Fugu, a talented and toxic blowfish sushi; Banh Bao, a Chinese meat bun character; and the Yakuzas, underworld figures who deal in wasabi and occasionally ally with Néko.

Who are the main characters of Kobushi?

Ebi: descended from a long line of stinking ninjas known as the Kudupus, Ebi is haunted by Oni-San, the stinking ghost. For Oni-San, Ebi's bad smell is a family curse that will only be broken if he is eaten by a god. Ebi will do anything to get eaten by Neko, but he stinks so bad that even the big cat won't eat him. So Ebi makes a deal with Neko that if Ebi helps Neko eat Kobushi, the big cat must eat him last, thus breaking the curse.
Master Tako: he is the leader of the Kobushi community. He teaches them the discipline they need to master the martial arts. Master Tako is always Zen and seems unflappable. But beware: he can be rude, turning up where no-one expects him to, to teach the Kobushis the rigours of the martial arts.
Neko: a megalomaniac and egocentric, Neko thinks he's a Japanese deity and has only one obsession: to eat all the Kobushis, except Ebi, despite the pact he made with him, because he can't stand bad smells. He is determined to eat all the Kobushis, and will use any means necessary to achieve his goal.
Onigiri: sensitive and refined, Onigri is not much for fighting, preferring the arts. His extreme politeness makes it impossible for him to refuse anything: he always agrees to do a favour. He is very good with his hands and never lies.
Tamago : this sushi-omelet is a super-samouraï. Tamago is the most disciplined Kobushi of them all, and Master Tako's best pupil. Tamago seems to have no emotions or feelings. In truth, he just hides them, like all great samurai.
Toro : he is the youngest of the group and prides himself on being the most expensive sushi. He takes the liberty of improvising martial arts rather than learning Kobushido.
Hokkigai : Hokkigaï would like to become a samurai, but he's super clumsy. If he succeeds in something, it's always by chance.
