Story

“The Peter Potamus Show” was an American animated television series that aired from 1964 to 1967. It was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions, the animation studio behind many popular shows such as “The Flintstones,” “Yogi Bear,” and “Scooby-Doo.”

The show centered around the titular character, Peter Potamus, a purple anthropomorphic hippopotamus who spoke with a Southern drawl. Peter was known for his laid-back attitude and his love of adventure. He was often accompanied by his sidekick, So-So the monkey, who wore a fez and provided comic relief throughout the show.

Each episode followed Peter and So-So as they traveled to different parts of the world, encountering various obstacles and villains along the way. They would often end up in wacky situations, such as accidentally joining the French Foreign Legion or becoming spies for the government.

The show also featured several segments that were not related to Peter and So-So’s adventures. These included “Breezly and Sneezly,” a segment about a polar bear and a seal who were always trying to sneak into a military base, and “Yippee, Yappee, and Yahooey,” a segment about three loyal dogs who worked as palace guards.

One of the most memorable aspects of “The Peter Potamus Show” was its theme song, which was sung by Peter himself. The lyrics went, “Peter Potamus, he’s the hippo that can’t be topped / Peter Potamus, he’s the one that’s never going to stop / He’s the grooviest thing, he’s the hippest thing, he’s the swingin’est cat / Of all the hippos in the jungle, he’s the craziest, coolest, and the most outrageous!”

Despite its popularity during its original run, “The Peter Potamus Show” has not remained as well-known as some of Hanna-Barbera’s other shows. However, it is still remembered fondly by many who grew up watching it. Its wacky adventures, memorable characters, and catchy theme song make it a classic example of the animated shows of the 1960s.
