The young fox cub Tod is taken in by a kindly widow woman named Widow Tweed. Despite the objections of her neighbor, Amos Slade, an ill-tempered man who hates all animals, Widow Tweed raises Tod as her own. As he grows older, Tod becomes friends with Copper, Slade’s hound dog pup. However, when they grow up, their friendship is put to the test as Slade trains Copper to be a hunting dog while Tod must learn to fend for himself in the wilderness.
