Founded in 1929
Country: United States
Director(s): James Culhane, Mark Fleischer
hand drawn 2D animation
Fleischer Studios was created in 1929 by Max and Dave Fleischer and is a pioneer in original animation craft. The studio brought to life some of the most iconic characters, such as Betty Boop and Koko the Clown, but it also had a hand in the animation of much-loved Popeye and Superman. In the early 20th century, most animated characters were anthropomorphic animals, whereas Fleischer mostly created original human characters. Recurrent themes in Fleisher Studios animations are surrealism, dark humor, psychology and sexuality. The studio still exists today, with Max Fleischer’s grandson Mark acting as its CEO. Fleischer Studios was acquiered by Paramount Pictures.
