In the summer of 2023, DreamWorks Animation takes a plunge into the tumultuous realm of high school with an uproarious and heartfelt action comedy. It revolves around a timid teenager who stumbles upon her extraordinary lineage as a mythical sea kraken, leading her to realize that her destiny lies deeper in the ocean than she ever imagined. Ruby Gillman, a sweet and awkward 16-year-old, yearns to fit in at Oceanside High but often feels unnoticed. While she tutors her skateboarding crush in math, he only seems to admire her for her knowledge of fractals. Additionally, Ruby is prohibited from joining the cool kids at the beach by her overly protective supermom, who strictly forbids her from ever entering the water. However, when Ruby dares to break her mother’s cardinal rule, she uncovers a remarkable truth. She is a direct descendant of the formidable Kraken queens, destined to inherit the throne from her formidable grandmother, the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas. The Kraken have sworn to safeguard the world’s oceans from the self-absorbed and power-hungry mermaids, with whom they have been engaged in an eternal conflict. Yet, there is a significant and immediate predicament: Chelsea, the beautiful and popular new girl at school, happens to be a mermaid. Ruby will ultimately need to embrace her true identity and rise to the occasion, protecting those she holds dear on a grand scale.
